Duration
6 days (Full-time)

Penetrant Testing (PT), also known as Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT), is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method for detecting surface defects in non-porous materials such as metals, ceramics, and plastics. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the principles, techniques, and applications of PT, which is commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, and manufacturing.

Participants will learn how to properly apply penetrants, remove excess penetrant, and develop indications to reveal surface flaws such as cracks, porosity, and laps. The course covers various penetrant testing methods, including visible (color contrast) and fluorescent techniques, and emphasizes the selection of appropriate penetrants based on material type and inspection conditions. Practical sessions will reinforce theoretical knowledge, ensuring trainees gain hands-on experience in conducting reliable inspections. Safety precautions and compliance with international NDT standards, such as ASNT, ISO, and ASTM, are also emphasized.

What you'll learn

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of penetrant testing and its applications in defect detection.
  • Identify surface defects such as cracks, porosity, and laps in various non-porous materials.
  • Select the appropriate type of penetrant (visible or fluorescent) for different testing conditions.
  • Apply penetrants correctly, remove excess penetrant, and develop indications for accurate defect detection.
  • Interpret test results and differentiate between relevant and non-relevant indications.
  • Ensure compliance with international standards such as ASNT, ISO, and ASTM.
  • Follow safety guidelines and best practices for penetrant testing.

Who is this course for?

  • NDT professionals looking to enhance their skills in penetrant testing.
  • Engineers and inspectors in aerospace, oil & gas, manufacturing, and automotive industries.
  • Quality control and maintenance personnel responsible for structural integrity assessments.
  • Welders and fabrication specialists involved in defect detection and inspection.
  • Students and trainees pursuing a career in non-destructive testing (NDT).
